The base materials for both 3003 and 3004 pre-coated aluminum coils belong to the 3000-series rust-resistant aluminum family. They utilize manganese as the primary strengthening and anti-corrosion element and are non-heat-treatable alloys that rely on cold working to increase hardness. Both are well-suited for pre-coating processes such as roller coating and baking, offering excellent coating adhesion and surface flatness.

3003 pre-coated aluminum coil is a binary aluminum-manganese alloy containing only manganese (1.0%–1.5%). With its simple composition and established formulation, it serves as a standard, widely used grade within the 3000-series and enjoys high market availability.
3004 prepainted aluminum coil is a ternary aluminum-manganese-magnesium alloy, featuring the addition of approximately 1% magnesium to the aluminum-manganese base. The addition of magnesium is the key factor distinguishing the performance of these two materials; it significantly enhances the base material's strength and toughness, improves tensile strength and dent resistance, and further boosts corrosion resistance.
3003 aluminum coil offers moderate strength, with a tensile strength of 120–180 MPa in the H18 temper. It has moderate hardness without excess rigidity, making it prone to bending or deformation under load; it is suitable only for meeting the load-bearing and wind-pressure requirements of standard flat panels.
Thanks to the addition of magnesium, 3004 aluminum coil boasts 30%–50% higher strength than the 3003 grade. It offers superior structural rigidity and outstanding resistance to denting, wind pressure, and stretching. Even in thinner gauges, it maintains excellent structural stability and resists warping or deformation, making it suitable for applications requiring medium-to-high structural strength.
3003 pre-coated aluminum coil exhibits excellent formability, ductility, and bending characteristics. It is resistant to cracking and paint flaking, making it compatible with various complex processing methods such as bending, roll forming, cutting, and deep drawing. With its high processing tolerance, it is a preferred material for irregularly shaped decorative components and simple profiles.
While the formability of 3004 pre-painted aluminum coils is slightly inferior to that of 3003, it remains a highly formable material. It is fully compatible with standard bending and roll-forming processes and offers superior deep-drawing performance, meeting requirements for high-precision forming and significant stretching; it is only slightly less flexible when it comes to extremely complex, thin-walled, irregular shaping.
Both materials possess excellent rust resistance, far surpassing that of 1-series pure aluminum pre-painted coils. 3003 is suitable for standard indoor and outdoor dry environments and typical atmospheric conditions, capable of withstanding daily oxidation and mild acid or alkali exposure.
3004 pre-painted aluminum coils offer comprehensively upgraded corrosion resistance, particularly against salt spray, humidity, and marine environments. They provide a longer service life and superior weather stability in coastal, high-humidity, and mildly industrial environments compared to 3003.
With its simple alloy composition, large-scale production, and low raw material costs, 3003 pe coated aluminum coil is a classic, economical, general-purpose material. It offers excellent overall cost-performance and is ideal for large-volume, standard applications.
Due to the addition of magnesium, 3004 PE coating aluminium coil entails slightly higher raw material and production costs, resulting in a higher market price than 3003. It is classified as a mid-to-high-end functional pre-painted aluminum coil designed for demanding conditions, rather than a general-purpose economical material.
Characterized by high cost-effectiveness and ease of processing, 3003 is suitable for standard applications that do not require high load-bearing capacity or resistance to severe corrosion. It is primarily used in civil and conventional industrial settings—such as standard building roofing, wall cladding panels, interior ceilings, thermal insulation jacketing, standard HVAC ductwork, rainwater downpipes, general decorative trim, and storage tank insulation cladding—making it the preferred material for lightweight and low-load applications.
Characterized by high strength, superior weather resistance, and deformation resistance, this material is suited for demanding environments involving heavy loads, high wind pressure, and corrosive conditions. It is primarily used in projects requiring exceptional structural stability and longevity, such as high-rise curtain walls, long-span industrial roofing, building envelope panels in coastal areas, high-strength HVAC ductwork, machinery casings, precision deep-drawn components, and heavy-duty outdoor decorative panels.
1. For projects with limited budgets, standard indoor or outdoor settings, and minimal structural load requirements—where extreme strength or deformation resistance is not critical—3003 pre-coated aluminum coils are the preferred choice. They offer excellent cost-performance value, are easy to process, and fully meet basic operational needs.
2. For projects located in coastal, high-humidity, or industrially polluted environments—or where panels must withstand high wind pressure and long-span loads, or meet stringent standards for flatness, deformation resistance, and service life—3004 pre-coated aluminum coils are the preferred choice. They eliminate risks of future deformation or corrosion and ensure greater long-term stability.
