For exterior cladding, roofing, signage, appliances, and transport panels, the most frequent performance concern is not aluminum strength. It is painted aluminum sheets losing color, gloss, or adhesion before the expected service life.
A painted product is a system: aluminum substrate, chemical pretreatment, primer, topcoat, backing coat, curing process, and protective packaging. A strong specification must address all of these components rather than requesting only a color code and thickness.

The substrate alloy and temper affect formability, flatness, and corrosion behavior. The coating chemistry primarily determines weathering resistance, stain resistance, and color retention.
For common architectural applications, 3003, 3004, 3105, and 5005 aluminum are frequently selected. 3003 and 3105 are widely used for roll-formed panels and trim because they balance forming performance with practical cost. 5005 is often specified for architectural anodizing or coating applications where a more uniform surface appearance is required.
The first specification decision is coating type.
| Coating system | Typical use | Main strength | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Polyester | Indoor panels, appliances, sheltered building components | Economical and available in many colors | Lower long-term UV resistance than fluoropolymer systems |
| SMP, silicone-modified polyester | Roofing, wall panels, trim | Better weatherability than standard polyester | Performance varies by resin formulation and film build |
| PVDF, commonly 70% PVDF resin systems | Premium facades, coastal projects, high-UV regions | Strong color and gloss retention when properly formulated | Higher material cost and longer approval process |
| PU, polyurethane | Industrial equipment, specialty finishes | Good abrasion and chemical resistance | Suitability for exterior exposure depends on the system |
For high-UV facades, exposed roofing, or coastal installations, specify PVDF coated aluminum only when the supplier can document the actual coating system and test basis. "PVDF-like" or "fluorocarbon" is not a complete technical description.
AAMA 2605 is a widely recognized North American performance specification for superior-performing organic finishes on aluminum extrusions and panels. It includes requirements for weathering, color retention, gloss retention, chalk resistance, adhesion, and humidity resistance. Confirm whether the offered finish is tested to the applicable AAMA standard, since AAMA 2605 compliance is not automatically created by using a fluoropolymer label.
For roofing and solar-reflective designs, request measured solar reflectance and thermal emittance values for the finished color. The Cool Roof Rating Council publishes rated product data for eligible products, while project requirements may reference ASTM C1549, ASTM E1918, or ASTM E1980 test methods. Do not assume a light color has a particular Solar Reflectance Index without test documentation.
Color chips and digital images are useful for initial selection, but they cannot replace agreed inspection conditions. Metallic, pearlescent, dark, and low-gloss finishes require especially careful control because visual variation is more noticeable across large installed areas.
Use this checklist in the inquiry and purchase order.
| Item to define | What to state | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Alloy and temper | Example: 3003-H24 or 3105-H24 | Controls forming behavior and mechanical properties |
| Base metal thickness | Nominal thickness and permitted tolerance | Avoids confusion between metal thickness and total coated thickness |
| Product form and dimensions | Cut length, width, coil ID/OD, slit width, or circle diameter | Supports equipment compatibility and yield planning |
| Finish | Color standard, gloss range, texture, side A/side B | Prevents mismatched appearance after fabrication |
| Coating type | Polyester, SMP, PVDF, PU, or approved equivalent | Sets the expected durability level |
| Coating film thickness | Dry-film thickness for primer and topcoat, where required | Thin films may reduce barrier protection and hiding power |
| Pretreatment | Supplier process and performance standard | Essential for wet adhesion and corrosion resistance |
| Test requirements | ASTM, AAMA, EN, or project-specific criteria | Creates an objective inspection basis |
| Protective film | Film type, adhesion level, UV exposure limit | Reduces handling scratches without leaving adhesive residue |
| Packaging | Moisture barrier, desiccant, edge protection, pallet method | Controls transit corrosion and edge damage |
The term "coating thickness" needs clarification. It may mean the topcoat only, total dry film on the exposed side, or the combined paint layers on both sides. State the required dry-film thickness and measurement method. ASTM D7091 covers nondestructive measurement of dry film thickness of nonmagnetic coatings applied to nonmagnetic metals, including aluminum.
For color acceptance, identify the instrument geometry, illuminant, observer angle, sample orientation, and maximum permitted color difference. ASTM D2244 provides procedures for calculating color tolerances and color differences from instrumentally measured color coordinates. A Delta E value alone is incomplete without the selected color-difference formula and test conditions.

A coating sample that looks good at approval may still fail during forming, storage, or field exposure. Require evidence that relates to the actual service environment.
For factory acceptance, the following tests are commonly relevant:
Adhesion: Cross-hatch adhesion is commonly evaluated under ASTM D3359. The correct method depends on coating thickness and project requirements.
Flexibility: T-bend testing checks whether the finish cracks during roll forming or bending. Specify the bend requirement for the actual metal thickness and temper.
Impact resistance: ASTM D2794 evaluates resistance to deformation from a falling weight impact.
Solvent resistance: MEK rub testing may be used as a process-control indicator for cure, but it should not be treated as a stand-alone warranty of outdoor durability.
Humidity and corrosion exposure: ASTM D2247 covers humidity testing, while ASTM B117 describes salt-spray apparatus. Salt-spray hours alone do not accurately predict outdoor service life, so use them with adhesion, creep, and field-weathering evidence.
Chalk resistance: ASTM D4214 provides methods for evaluating degree of chalking on exterior paint films.
Request a mill test certificate for the aluminum substrate and a coating quality record showing color, gloss, film thickness, adhesion, and relevant forming tests for the production batch. For projects with strict facade requirements, retain an approved control panel from the same production run for later comparison.
Packaging is also a coating-protection issue. Aluminum can stain or corrode when moisture is trapped between tightly wound surfaces. Specify dry indoor storage, covered transport, sealed export packaging when needed, and prompt removal of wet wrapping. Protective film should be removed within the supplier's stated period, especially after outdoor exposure or heat exposure.

Confirm alloy, temper, metal thickness, dimensions, and allowable tolerances.
Approve physical color panels, not only electronic color values.
State coating chemistry, dry-film thickness, gloss, texture, and backside finish.
Set measurable acceptance criteria using relevant ASTM, AAMA, EN, or project standards.
Test formed samples when the material will be bent, stamped, or roll formed.
Verify batch records before shipment.
Inspect packaging, moisture protection, edges, and film condition upon receipt.
Store material dry, ventilated, and away from condensation before processing.
