What Are Aluminum Coil Coating Quality Control Tests

The coating provides a dual guarantee of "protection + decoration" for color-coated aluminum coils. Its quality directly determines the lifespan, applicability, and appearance of the aluminum coil. Standardized quality testing is crucial to ensuring product compliance and reducing usage risks.

Basic Appearance Inspection

Appearance is the most direct initial inspection stage, focusing on checking for visible surface defects. Lay coated aluminium sheets under natural or white light and check:

  • Color Consistency: Uniform and pure, color difference ΔE ≤ 1.5 (CIELab standard), no yellowing, fading, or color spots.

  • Surface Smoothness: Smooth, free of orange peel, runs, pinholes, bubbles, scratches, and particulate impurities; edges free of burrs and paint peeling.

  • Coating Integrity: No missed coatings or exposed substrate; uniform coverage. Decorative aluminum coils have stricter requirements: pinholes and bubbles ≤ 2 per m², scratch length ≤ 5mm.

Core Performance Testing

Core performance determines the coating's protective capability and lifespan, mainly including adhesion, thickness, hardness, and flexibility.

Adhesion testing: It uses the cross-cut test (suitable for thin coatings ≤250μm): Draw a 1/2/3mm grid down to the substrate, then quickly peel it off with tape. Grade 0 (no peeling) is optimal, and Grade 5 (severe peeling) is unacceptable. For thick coatings or high-requirement applications, the pull-out test (ISO 4624, GB/T 5210) is used to quantify adhesion strength. Bending and impact tests can simulate actual deformation and observe whether the coating cracks or peels off.

Coating thickness: It is measured at at least 5 points (including edges and center) on the aluminum coil using a professional thickness gauge. The thickness is controlled between 15–35μm, with an accuracy of ±1μm and a deviation of ≤±2μm within the same coil. Multi-layer coatings require layer-by-layer testing to ensure reasonable thickness.

Hardness and abrasion resistance: Hardness is tested using the pencil hardness test (750g load). A qualified coating is ≥2H. Abrasion resistance is tested using an abrasion tester according to ISO 5470. A weight loss of ≤10mg after 500 revolutions and no exposed substrate are considered excellent.

Flexibility testing: Aluminum coils often requires bending. A 180° bending test (bending radius 3T, where T is the thickness of the aluminum coil) is performed. The coating is considered合格 (qualified) if there are no cracks or peeling.

Environmental Adaptability Testing

Simulating actual usage environments verifies the long-term durability of the coating, mainly including corrosion resistance, weather resistance, and heat resistance.

Salt Spray Test (ASTM B117, ISO 9227): 35℃, 5% salt spray environment, 240h for normal use; high corrosion resistance ≥720h, rating ≥9, no blistering or rust is considered合格 (qualified).

Damp Heat Test (GB/T 1740): 60℃/95% RH environment for 2000h, adhesion loss <1.

Chemical Reagent Resistance (ISO 2812): Immersion in 5% acid, alkali, or solvent for 24h, no discoloration, softening, or peeling.

Weather-resistant: Outdoor musket brown trim coil undergoes UV aging for 1000–2000 hours according to ASTM G155 and GB/T 14522. After 2000 hours, the high-quality fluorocarbon coating exhibits: ΔE < 3, gloss retention ≥ 80%, and no chalking, cracking, or fading.

Heat resistance: Aluminum coils used in high-temperature applications are considered合格 (qualified) if, after baking at 150℃ for 2 hours, the coating shows no softening, blistering, peeling, or discoloration.

Auxiliary Testing

Gloss (GB/T 9754, ASTM D523): Commonly used 60–90 GU, with an error of ±2 GU, ensuring uniform appearance and texture.

Environmental and safety: For applications in household appliances, kitchenware, and medical settings, heavy metal (Pb ≤ 90 ppm, Cd ≤ 75 ppm) and VOC emissions (≤ 50 g/m²) must be tested to meet environmental and safety requirements.
