Large rainwater-system manufacturers usually care about one issue above all others: coating durability. The base metal can be correct, but early chalking, color fade, edge corrosion, or paint cracking during roll forming can still create claims. This article focuses on how to specify, test, compare, and receive aluminium gutter coil for consistent exterior performance.
A gutter coil is normally supplied as pre-painted aluminum in narrow-width master or slit coils for K-style, half-round, fascia, and custom roll-formed gutters. Common alloys include 3003 and 3105 because they combine formability, corrosion resistance, and paintability. Aluminum has a density of about 2.70 g/cm3, far below steel, which helps reduce handling weight and installed load on fascia boards.

Start with alloy, temper, thickness, width, and coating. Do not approve color panels alone. A useful purchase specification should name the standard, coating system, acceptance tests, inner diameter, coil weight range, and packaging method.
Relevant standards include ASTM B209/B209M for aluminum and aluminum-alloy flat rolled products, EN 485 for aluminum plate and coil properties, EN 573 for alloy designation, and EN 1396 for continuously organic-coated aluminum. For coating performance, AAMA 2603, AAMA 2604, and AAMA 2605 are widely used architectural coating references. AAMA 2605 has the most demanding outdoor exposure requirement among the three, including longer South Florida exposure than AAMA 2604 and AAMA 2603.
| Item | Practical specification point | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Alloy | 3105 or 3003 | Good formability and corrosion resistance for gutters |
| Temper | H24, H26, or supplier-approved forming temper | Balances stiffness and roll-forming safety |
| Thickness | 0.027 in, 0.032 in, or project-specific metric equivalent | Controls dent resistance, stiffness, and yield per ton |
| Coating | Polyester, SMP, or PVDF fluoropolymer | Determines color retention and exterior durability |
| Standard | ASTM B209/B209M, EN 485, EN 1396 as applicable | Creates measurable acceptance criteria |
For aluminum gutter stock, 3105-H24 or 3105-H26 is a common choice when a painted surface must survive bending and outdoor exposure. 3003 can also be suitable, especially where excellent formability is prioritized. Avoid assuming one alloy is automatically superior; verify the forming radius, paint system, and local environment.
Coating selection should match climate, color, warranty exposure, and forming severity. Dark colors absorb more heat, so thermal cycling can be more severe. Coastal zones add chloride exposure. Industrial areas may add acidic contaminants. Aluminum naturally forms a protective oxide, but cut edges, scratches, and incompatible fasteners can still become corrosion points.
| Coating type | Typical position | Strength | Limitation to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard polyester | Economy exterior use | Good workability and wide color range | Lower long-term color retention than higher-grade systems |
| SMP, silicone-modified polyester | Mid-range exterior use | Better chalk and fade resistance than standard polyester | Performance varies by resin content and supplier formula |
| PVDF fluoropolymer | Premium exterior use | Strong color and gloss retention; often specified under AAMA 2605 | Higher cost and minimum order constraints may apply |
For pre-painted aluminum coil, require both the front-coat and back-coat details. The exterior face may have primer plus topcoat, while the reverse side may use a service coat. Confirm nominal dry film thickness and tolerance with the mill. Do not compare offers only by total coating thickness; resin chemistry and curing quality also affect performance.

A practical test package for coating durability should include:
| Test | Common method | Procurement value |
|---|---|---|
| Paint adhesion | ASTM D3359 cross-hatch | Confirms coating bond after processing |
| T-bend flexibility | ASTM D4145 or EN 13523 series | Screens cracking risk during roll forming |
| Impact resistance | ASTM D2794 or EN 13523 series | Checks paint toughness under handling stress |
| Color difference | ASTM D2244 | Controls batch-to-batch color variation |
| Gloss | ASTM D523 | Controls visible appearance consistency |
| Salt spray screening | ASTM B117 | Useful comparative test, not a service-life prediction |
When specifying salt spray, state the hours and acceptance criteria. For example, 500 h or 1000 h with limits for blistering and creepage from scribe. ASTM B117 itself does not predict real outdoor life; it is a controlled screening test. For exterior color retention, AAMA exposure performance is more relevant than salt spray alone.
For PVDF aluminum coil, ask whether the coating system is designed to meet AAMA 2605 rather than simply containing PVDF resin. The distinction matters because AAMA 2605 covers several performance areas, including weathering, chalking, color retention, adhesion, and chemical resistance.
Thickness affects yield, stiffness, roll-forming stability, and installed durability. In the U.S. market, 0.027 in and 0.032 in are common gutter gauges, while heavier material may be used for commercial or high-impact locations. Metric projects should specify actual millimeters rather than relying on gauge names.
For gutter coil thickness, set tolerance according to the governing standard and contract. Also confirm whether the quoted thickness includes paint or refers to bare metal thickness. This prevents disputes during incoming inspection.
| Decision area | Recommended action | Inspection method |
|---|---|---|
| Width | Match roll former and gutter profile | Measure slit width at head, middle, tail |
| Camber | Set maximum allowed deviation | Lay sample flat and measure edge drift |
| Burr | Specify low-burr slitting | Touch check plus magnification if needed |
| Coil ID | Commonly 405 mm or 508 mm, project dependent | Verify against decoiler requirement |
| Coil weight | Match lifting and unwinding equipment | Check packing list and scale weight |
| Surface | No pressure marks, wet stains, or coating scratches | Visual check under consistent lighting |
Packaging is not a minor detail. Rainwater products are often made from painted coil, so transit abrasion can become visible product defects. Require eye-to-sky or eye-to-wall orientation as needed, moisture-resistant wrapping, edge protectors, desiccant where suitable, and stable pallet design. For sea freight, ask for export packing and container moisture controls.
Pricing should be reviewed as a formula, not as a single number. A transparent quotation normally separates aluminum metal value, regional premium, conversion charge, coating charge, slitting charge, packing, and freight. The London Metal Exchange aluminum price is a public reference, but final landed cost also changes with regional premiums, paint resin, color, order size, width program, and payment terms.
For compliance, request mill test certificates and coating test reports. If goods enter the EU, REACH declarations may be needed. For markets with restrictions on heavy metals in coatings, request declarations covering lead, cadmium, and hexavalent chromium where applicable. RoHS is not normally a gutter standard, but some corporate specifications still request restricted-substance statements.
Use this receiving checklist for every shipment of rainwater system materials:
Match alloy, temper, thickness, width, color code, and coating system to the purchase order.
Check mill test certificate values against ASTM B209/B209M or EN 485 requirements.
Verify coating adhesion, T-bend, color difference, and gloss reports for the shipped batch.
Inspect coil edges for burrs, telescoping, dents, water marks, and scratches before unloading approval.
Store indoors on dry, level ground; avoid condensation and contact with alkaline materials.
Separate aluminum from copper run-off and incompatible metals during installation planning to reduce galvanic corrosion risk.
Run a short trial through the roll former and inspect bend zones before full production release.
