Matt Stone Grey Aluminium

Matt stone grey aluminium is primarily a surface-specification product, not a single alloy grade. For construction, cladding, appliances, transport interiors, signage, and fabricated components, the largest procurement risk is usually colour consistency between batches.

A colour name alone is insufficient. "Stone grey" may refer to RAL 7030, a proprietary colour card, or a project-approved sample. "Matt" may mean low gloss, but gloss level must be numerically defined. A clear purchase specification prevents visible panel-to-panel variation, mismatched replacement material, and rejected fabricated parts.

Specify the Finish Before Selecting the Metal

For painted aluminium, colour and coating performance depend on the substrate, pretreatment, paint system, cure control, and inspection method. Procurement documents should separate these variables rather than requesting only "matt stone grey."

RAL 7030 is commonly called Stone Grey in the RAL Classic system. It should be treated as a visual target, not as a substitute for a signed control sample. Coating manufacturers can formulate slightly different spectral responses that appear similar under daylight yet differ under LED, fluorescent, or warm indoor lighting. This effect is metamerism.

For facade or large-panel work, request sprayed-out production samples under agreed lighting before releasing the full order. Keep material from one production batch and one coating line for each continuous visible elevation where feasible. Mixing batches is particularly risky on broad, flat surfaces.

Material, Processing, and Compliance Controls

The metal substrate must match forming and service requirements. Common choices include 1xxx series aluminium for high formability, 3xxx series for general formed applications, and 5xxx series where higher strength or specific corrosion performance is needed. The suitable alloy and temper depend on final bending radius, stamping depth, thickness, and environment.

For dimensional and mechanical-property control, contracts commonly reference ASTM B209 for aluminium and aluminium-alloy plate and rolled products, or relevant EN standards such as EN 573 for alloy designations and chemical composition and EN 485 for cold-rolled product requirements. The applicable edition, product form, alloy, temper, and tolerance class must be stated in the order.

For coil-coated surfaces, EN 13523 provides test methods for evaluating properties such as gloss, colour difference, coating thickness, flexibility, impact resistance, adhesion, and corrosion resistance. It is a test-method series, not a blanket declaration that every painted product has the same performance level. Specify the required test and acceptance criterion.

Where exterior architectural performance is required, evaluate the coating system against the relevant project standard. In North America, AAMA 2605 is frequently specified for high-performance organic coatings on architectural aluminium extrusions and panels. Confirm that the supplier's system and product scope actually fall within the stated certification or warranty conditions.

For EU-bound finished products, assess chemical compliance under REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006. If the end use is electrical or electronic equipment, RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU may also be relevant. Require a current declaration applicable to the supplied coating, protective film, and any regulated substances, rather than relying on a generic statement.

Cost, Supply Chain, and Acceptance Plan

Delivered cost is best evaluated as a formula, not a fixed market assumption:

Delivered cost = aluminium reference price + regional premium + rolling conversion + coating conversion + slitting/cut-to-length + packaging + freight + duties/taxes + financing and currency exposure

The aluminium reference component is commonly linked to the London Metal Exchange cash or three-month contract, but the exact basis, currency, pricing date, regional premium, and surcharge treatment should be written into the commercial agreement. Coating systems, width, thickness, order size, paint colour, and special packaging affect conversion cost. Custom low-gloss colours generally require more planning than standard stocked finishes.

Use the following weight check to validate quotations and freight calculations. Aluminium density is approximately 2,700 kg/m³:

Weight per m² = thickness in mm × 2.70 kg/m²

For example, 0.70 mm material weighs approximately 1.89 kg/m² before allowing for coating and packaging. This calculation helps compare quoted price per tonne, per square metre, and per finished part.

Market timing matters. Aluminium pricing responds to LME movements, regional physical premiums, energy costs, freight availability, trade measures, and currency. Coated material has an additional lead-time layer: mill rolling availability, paint procurement, colour matching, coating-line scheduling, slitting, and dispatch. Reserve production capacity before fabrication dates are fixed, especially for project-specific colours.
